Emsella Machine Q & A
What is the EMSELLA® machine?
EMSELLA is a noninvasive, outpatient procedure used to strengthen the pelvic floor muscles in men and women. It provides a safe, effective, and nonsurgical treatment for urinary incontinence and/or sexual dysfunction caused by a weak pelvic floor.
The pelvic floor is a group of muscles and connective tissues attached to your pelvis. These tissues support your pelvic organs, including your urethra, bladder, intestines, and rectum. Your pelvic floor helps stabilize your hips and upper body and contributes to sexual health and function.
As you age, your pelvic floor weakens. When combined with other factors, such as childbirth or prolonged sitting, you’re more likely to experience urinary incontinence and other pelvic floor problems.
Who should consider treatment with the EMSELLA machine?
Request an EMSELLA machine consultation at Excelsis Health if you have any of the following symptoms:
- Pelvic pressure or fullness
- Constipation or difficulty with bowel movements
- Pain during sexual intercourse
- Pain in the pelvic region or genitals
- Pelvic muscle spasms
- Urinary leakage
- Urinary incontinence
The EMSELLA machine may provide relief for lower back pain or painful urination.
How does the EMSELLA machine work?
The EMSELLA machine looks like a high-tech chair. During treatment, you sit upright with your knees shoulder-width apart and your feet flat on the floor. Once you’re comfortable, your Excelsis Health provider turns the EMSELLA machine on.
The machine directs targeted electromagnetic energy at your pelvic floor causing your muscles to contract rapidly. These contractions strengthen your pelvic floor muscles and retrain them to support your pelvic organs.
Each treatment session lasts about 30 minutes. During the procedure, it’s important to keep your spine straight and your legs perpendicularly flexed at a 90-degree angle.
Is treatment with the EMSELLA machine painful?
Treatment with the EMSELLA machine is safe and usually well-tolerated. It’s normal to experience tingling and muscle floor contractions during the procedure. Your core muscles may feel a little sore afterward like they would after a workout, but it shouldn’t interfere with your routine or quality of life.
How many EMSELLA machine treatments will I need?
The number of EMSELLA treatments you need depends on the severity of your symptoms and the underlying cause. Most people see a significant improvement after four to six sessions* spaced several weeks apart.
